Though there are a few libraries in Memphis, the most well-known is the Memphis Public Library. The library has over 800,000 items in its register and is actually split into 18 different branches throughout Shelby County. The main branch opened its doors in 1955, though the Main Branch was replaced by the Central Branch in 2001. The library focuses on educating young and old people alike as well as encouraging people to read and partake in community events.
