Memphis Sports

Sports are a significant part of Memphis’ background, both professionally and recreationally. Through Memphis Park Services, the city has plenty of public sporting facilities. Memphis has 17 swimming pools, eight golf courses, nearly 50 different athletic fields, over 100 basketball courts, and multiple tennis courts. For Memphis residents interested in playing any sport, there is plenty of opportunity to do so.

In the past, Memphis has had multiple professional baseball teams, though the Memphis Redbirds are the current team. The Memphis Redbirds are a Triple-A minor league baseball team affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals. The team plays out of the AutoZone Park each season.

The Memphis Grizzlies are the city’s basketball team. The Grizzlies are a National Basketball Association team affiliated with the Southwest Division of the Western Conference. The Grizzlies play out of the FedEx Forum each season. Memphis is also the proud home to the Memphis Tigers, the basketball team associated with the University of Memphis.

Memphis does not currently have a professional football team, though they are happy to be home to the University of Memphis Tigers, who play their games out of Liberty Bowl Stadium. The Memphis Panthers are an amateur football team that plays for the North American Football League. The Panthers play out of Halle Stadium each season.

Memphis is also home to an ice hockey team, a motorsports park, a rugby team, a roller derby team, an annual tennis championship, and two pro-wrestling organizations.
